The Maroons were escaped slaves who fought the British in the Mountains of Jamaica. They won their freedom from the British in 1838.  Such famous Maroons as Nanny Maroon and Cudjo are Jamaican hero’s. You can see pictures of famous Maroons on Jamaica currency here.
